PARTICIPATORY BOARDING CAMPAIGN FOR CETACEAN MONITORING

Campaign Objectives

The primary objective is to gather information on the presence and distribution of cetaceans on the Galician Shelf through marine monitoring based on scientific criteria.

The secondary objective is to provide participants with technical training, awareness, and education about marine environments in general, and about marine mammals in particular.

Participation and Criteria

Anyone without mobility difficulties can participate, regardless of their skill level. Those under 18 years of age should inquire about participation. For safety reasons, children under 8 years of age cannot be admitted to the activity.

Organization

The logistics for the maritime trips begin with the pool of interested parties, like you. The boat dates are available HERE; you can check the dates, availability, and make your reservation. Afterwards, we will need to confirm that the weather is good at sea to allow us to depart.

We try to depart with winds under 10 knots and a swell with waves under 1 meter, conditions suitable for all ages and for whale watching.

Boarding will not be confirmed until 48 hours prior to departure and may be canceled between 48 and 24 hours due to sudden bad weather. Failure to fill all available spots may also be grounds for canceling the trip.

BOARDING SELECTION AND RESERVATION

First: Select the boarding date, port, and ship you are interested in, and check that there are available seats.

Second: Make the payment for the seat reservation. The CEMMA account number for the reservation deposit is:

IBAN ES25 2100 4790 4702 0002 9083.
You can enter EP_name_date as the payment method.

Third: Let us know by emailing cemmasolicitud@gmail.com. Please confirm the payment by sending a copy of the receipt, including the full name of the participant(s), their ID, and a contact phone number.

Once the reservation is made, that seat will be reserved for you, and you will need to wait for confirmation of boarding a few days beforehand.

Cancellations

If you request to cancel your reserved spot more than four days in advance of boarding, we will find an alternative, either another date for your reservation if you wish, or a replacement, or, failing that, we will refund the amount. If the cancellation is made less than four days in advance, or a replacement cannot be found, a refund will not be possible, as it would mean the entire boarding trip would be cancelled.

If boarding must be cancelled due to bad weather or a lack of participants, we will find an alternative reservation; otherwise, the amount will be refunded.

ON-BOARD METHODOLOGY

Upon boarding, we will provide a safety briefing. From there, we will establish continuous observation shifts, following the cetacean monitoring methodology, in which you can participate to the extent possible: gathering environmental information, observing shifts, sightings, and collecting data on cetacean sightings and marine debris.

What to Bring

Bring a hat, sunscreen, and light, warm clothing (conditions at sea can change quickly). Also bring food, water, fruit, and nuts. If you need or think you need motion sickness pills, take them half an hour before boarding. There are restrooms on board the boats for the entire 8-hour trip (except for the Zodiac, which takes 3 hours).

PARTICIPATORY BOARDINGS

We need to know that we will observe cetaceans on 90% of the boardings and seabirds on 100%, but there is no guarantee of observation upon departure. We will conduct monitoring work and also spend a pleasant day at sea.
Regarding cetacean observation, we may see bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) more frequently. We may also see harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), pilot whales (Globicephala melas), and whales.

As for birds, we will mainly see gulls, cormorants, gannets, and shearwaters, but we may also observe storm petrels and less common gulls such as the Sabine gulls.

We will record cetacean sightings and any debris we find. We will be surprised when we arrive at port to see that we have recorded more sightings of garbage than cetaceans.

To conduct these studies, CEMMA has the corresponding authorizations from both the Xunta de Galicia and the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Above all, we must inform you of and respect current legislation.
